Intel to launch 64-bit Pentium 4

Later this month Intel will launch 64-bit versions of their Peniutm 4 processor. The upgrade comes 1.5 years after AMD introduced the Athlon 64 chip. A 64-bit computer processor is not necessarily faster than a 32-bit part, but it allows a computer to accommodate more memory and churn through larger files faster. Microsoft has yet to introduce a 64-bit version of its Windows XP operating system.Intel has said it would not introduce 64-bit computing into its desktop PC parts until software could take advantage of the extra power, but now expects that is the right time for that. The new 64-bit chip will be called the Intel 600 series.
